Curriculum

 

I. Outline of Curriculum and Syllabus

Training period: 10 months.

Weeks of training: 38 (first two weeks of January – vacation; end of June – final examinations).

Class hours per week: up to 36 hours per week. In addition, much independent work is implied.

Variable duration of courses: from 8 to 228 hours.

II. Content of Training

  • Language A – Russian;
  • Languages B – English, French;
  • Languages C – English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese.

III. Module subjects

Module 1: General subjects

  • Basics of translation and interpreting.

  • Organizational structure and activities of the United Nations, European Commission and other international organizations and their role in the system of international relations.

  • Current international issues.

  • The role of Russia in world politics.

  • Introduction to finance and banking.

  • Basics of international law.

  • Basics of human culture (mythology, religion, Russian and world literature, arts, music, cinema, sports, fashion. etc.).

Module 2: Practical studies on speech communication

  • The Russian language as the language of translation and interpretation*.

  • Practical studies on speech communication in Language B.

  • Practical studies on speech communication in Language C.

     

* The Russian language being the basis of any translation and interpretation process will be taught during the entire period of training in various forms, including practical stylistics, text analysis, grammar, etc. It is envisaged that students will write presentations on specific themes and take dictations.

Module 3: Practical translation/interpretation

Training will be provided only by practicing translators/interpreters.

Specialization 1) Conference Interpretation

  • Consecutive interpretation from Language B to Language A.

  • Consecutive interpretation from Language C to Language A.

  • Consecutive interpretation from Language A to Language B.

  • Simultaneous interpretation from Language B to Language A.

  • Simultaneous interpretation from Language A to Language B.

  • Simultaneous interpretation from Language C to Language A.

  • Translation from Language B to Language A.

  • Translation from Language C to Language A.

  • Translation from Language A to Language B.

Specialization 2) Conference Translation

  • Translation from Language B to Language A*.

  • Translation from Language C to Language A.

  • Translation from Language A to Language B.

  • Practical studies on the use of electronic resources in translation.

  • Practical studies on text editing.

  • Consecutive interpretation from Language B to Language A.

  • Consecutive interpretation from Language C to Language A.

  • Consecutive interpretation from Language A to Language B.

Specialization 3) Conference Interpretation and Translation

  • Text for consecutive interpretation from Language B to Language A.
  • Text for consecutive interpretation from Language C to Language A.
  • Text for consecutive interpretation from Language A to Language B.
  • Text for simultaneous interpretation from Language B to Language A.
  • Text for simultaneous interpretation from Language A to Language B.
  • Text for simultaneous interpretation from Language C to Language A.
  • Translation of texts from Language B to Language A (consists of two texts – general and specialized).
  • Translation of a general text from Language C to Language A.
  • Interview.

 

* The program includes the study of basic text-types in translation; institutional translation – the UN and European Commission documentation, etc.; legal translation; specialized translation – financial, energy, environmental issues; media translation, etc.

 

On completing the course the students are granted state-recognized diploma in: 1) Conference Interpretation (simultaneous and consecutive); 2) Сonference Translation or 3) Conference Interpretation and Translation.
